Directions for use
Prepare & Clean
- The surface must be clean and dry - make sure all wax, polish and grease is removed. For best results use PaintNuts Panel Wipe and a Degreasing Cloth.
- If you have a deep scratch or chip OR if you can see bare metal or plastic, we recommend using PaintNuts Primer first - if rust is present, we suggest our Rust Convertor as well.
Shake & Test
- Shake the touch up car paint pen for 2-3 minutes to ensure the paint is thoroughly mixed.
If your paint is metallic or pearlescent, you may notice it has separated within the bottle - this paint will need a vigorous shake, even leave it upside down for 5 minutes first. - There are two ways to use the 20 ml paint touch up pen. The high precision needle like pen is inside the clear lid (with a red protective tip that stays inside the lid) – a firm pull will access this.
The small fine brush is within the paint – just unscrew at the white collar anticlockwise to access this. - Test a small amount of paint within the damaged area to check the colour match – give it 15 minutes to dry as paints can often appear different in colour; inside the bottle, when still wet or if applied incorrectly or onto original undamaged paint work.
Paint & Finish
- With either touch up paint pen or brush apply thin, light coats in smooth strokes; ensuring you only apply the paint within the damaged area.
If you’re using the needle point pen allow the nib to sit inside the scratch or chip and squeeze gently.
If new paint goes outside of the damaged area and on top of existing paint it will leave the area of repair looking darker or a higher level to the original bodywork. - Leave the paint to dry for 15 minutes before applying any further coats from the car touch up pen, if no further coat is required, then leave to cure for 1 hour before applying the PaintNuts Clear Lacquer.
PLEASE NOTE: – cold, damp weather can adversely affect the application, finish, and drying time of paints.

FAQs
Do paint pens work on a car?
To make sure our colour-matched touch up car paint works on your car, we use 1k paint as opposed to the traditional 2k non air-dried paints. The even better news is that all the colour-matched car paint used in our touch-up paint pens is MPEX professional-grade, high-quality premium car paint, which has been extensively tested. This means our touch up paint has been formulated to resist fading, chipping, flaking and achieves excellent results.
How do you use a paint pen on a car scratch?
For a quick guide on how to use our paint pens on car scratches, follow the advice below:
- Shake the pen for at least 60 seconds to mix the lacquer.
- Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of wax, polish, and dust.
- Apply thin, light coats with smooth strokes. For needlepoint pens, gently squeeze the lacquer into the scratch or chip.
- Let the lacquer dry for 10-25 minutes before applying a second coat if it needs it.
- Allow the lacquer to cure for 24 hours before using a polishing compound like our Scratch & Scuff Remover to blend the repair.

How good is a car touch-up paint pen?
Used correctly, a car touch-up pen will give you a good result without taking your car to the bodyshop. They are designed to fix minor damage like chips and scratches to make them less obvious, and they’ll be close to body-shop perfect. So long as you order the right paint and apply it as recommended, the damage will blend in.
PaintNuts car touch up pens are mixed to order because they are an exact colour match to the original paint. On older cars, your original paint may have faded - this is normal, but it does mean the colour of your pen might appear more vibrant in comparison.
You can blend in the fix by using other products, like PaintNuts Professional Scratch & Scuff Remover or a wax polish, to bring out more of the original colour and shine.
