Ford Fiesta car paint over the years
Now discontinued by Ford, the Fiesta has left a mark on motoring none-the-less. Initially, Ford had no plans to produce a supermini that competes with the small cars made by Fiat, Renault and BMC. That was until the 1973 oil crisis when oil became so expensive that it turned buyers to smaller cars.
Seeing an opportunity to capitalise on the crisis and the shortcomings of pre-existing small hatchbacks manufactured by Ford’s competitors, Ford went ahead with full production of the Fiesta. The first Ford Fiesta rolled off the production line in 1975 in Valencia, Spain, with Henry Ford II coining its Spanish-esque name as a nod to its Spanish roots.
Emerging with a longer wheel-base than the Ford 127, Ford’s smallest car at the time, the Ford Fiesta was shorter than the Ford Escort, and cheaper to make too - $100 per car less than the Escort.
The Ford Fiesta proved to be a hit, especially among UK drivers. In both the 1980s and 1990s, the Fiesta became the UK’s best selling car on two separate occasions. It was popular abroad too, becoming top of the German car market in 1980-1986.
It wasn’t just popular with the general public though. Seen by the side of stars like Roger Moore in ‘James Bond 007 - The Spy Who Loved Me’, Alesha Dixon, Jodie Kidd and Nell McAndrew, the Fiesta was endeared by celebrities also.
After 8 generations of the Fiesta, we now see that it has sadly been retired from the tarmac and assigned to the pages of history. As Ford looks towards developing electric models like the Ford Puma, which have proved more popular than the Fiesta in recent times, there was simply no more room for this reliable run-about. And although discontinued, there’s no doubt the Fiesta legacy will never be forgotten.
