Vauxhall Astra over the years
One of the most popular vehicles among UK motorists, the Vauxhall Astra has earned a reputation of the years for being a well-rounded and practical vehicle.
Introduced in 1979, Vauxhall has been sure to evolve the Astra in its design and technology so it meets the changing needs of drivers. Originally the Astra was simply the front-wheel drive Opel Kadett but with a Vauxhall badge on it instead. The vehicle was available for purchase as a 2-door saloon, 5-door hatchback or 5-door estate. Each of the variations had a boxy design and although none of them were particularly exciting to look at, the first Astra won What Car magazine’s ‘Car of the Year’ award in 1980. Early popular colours include: 650 Perlweiss and 799 Tieforange.
The second generation came in 1984. Mechanically it was more of the same. The Mark II Astra came with the same engine range and running gear as the first generation, but exterior wise it was completely different. Vauxhall ditched the boxy design and replaced it in favour for a more sleek and aerodynamic body, greatly improving its aesthetics as well as driving experience.
During its 7 year reign, this generation of Astra was available as either a saloon, hatchback, estate, cabriolet and later, the Vauxhall Astra GTE. Initially, the Vauxhall Astra GTE came with a 1.8L 115 hp but was soon replaced with a 2.0 litre 124 hp engine for better performance.
Since the second generation Vauxhall Astra, there have been 6 more generations of Astra, the eighth generation being the most recent one. These newer Vauxhall Astras come with emissions control as well as advancements in technology to make them even more environmentally friendly.
Bought by many road users for urban commuting, the Vauxhall Astra’s compact size, attractive design and emphasis on safety and technology for comfort and convenience, it’s easy to see why the Vauxhall Astra is one of the most popular cars for the everyday road-goer. Newer modern paint codes include: GYX Vertigo Blue, GAZ Olympic White and G1R Pepperoncino Red.
