The automotive division of Mitsubishi was first called Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., which was founded in 1917. Under this name, the first vehicle Mitsubishi produced was the Model-A, a 7 seater sedan based on the Fiat Tipo 3. 

After the end of WII, Mitsubishi made a deal with Willys and started assembling the Jeep CJ-3Bs. In the 1960s, Mitsubishi took off after the marque released its first mass-produced vehicle - the Mitsubishi 500. About a decade later, Mitsubishi Galants were being sold in the USA as Dodge Colts. Today, Mitsubishi is known for producing legendary cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (Mitsubishi Evo) and also being one of the leading pioneers for hybrid technology.
