Finding your BMW paint code
Finding your BMW code is easy and straightforward. As the name suggests, BMW paint codes are found in the vehicle. Specifically, BMW paint codes (or finding the BMW paint code from VIN) are usually found in the driver's-side door jamb.
However, on some BMW models, BMW paint codes may be in a different location to others. If this is the case, other areas where your BMW paint code may be located are:
- Inside the boot lid
- Under the bonnet
- Inside the wheel arch
- In the door hinge
- Inside the fuel cap

How do I apply BMW touch-up paint?
Our BMW colour-matched paint is available as a touch-up paint pen, bottle and brush, or car spray paint. The touch-up product you choose for your BMW colour-matched paint determines how to apply it.
For the BMW touch-up pen - First ensure the surface is clean and dry. Shake the pen for 60 seconds and apply thin coats, squeezing the paint into the scratches. Let the paint dry for 10-25 minutes before adding another coat. Allow 24 hours for the pen to cure before polishing.
For the BMW touch-up bottle & brush - Smooth the surface with sandpaper, then clean and dry it. If needed, apply primer. Shake the touch-up bottle for 2-3 minutes, test the colour in a small area, then apply thin coats to the damaged spot. Let the paint dry for 15 minutes between coats and leave it to cure for 1 hour before adding lacquer or polishing.
For the BMW touch-up aerosol - Smooth the surface, clean it thoroughly, and shake the aerosol for 2-3 minutes. Test the colour and spray pattern, then apply paint in smooth, cross-coats from 250mm away. Let it dry for 15 minutes before a second coat and wait 24 hours before applying lacquer. Clean the nozzle after use by spraying it upside-down.
How do I repair a scratch on my BMW?
To repair a scratch on your BMW, you will need some polishing compound like PaintNuts Scratch & Scuff Remover and a paint touch-up pen that is colour-matched to your BMW paintwork. Then, simply clean your vehicle, apply the polish with a Microfibre buffing cloth and then rub the compound in a circular motion over the scratch. With minor and faint scratches, this can be enough to make the scratch disappear. However, if the scratch is still present you will need to touch it up as well.
To touch up the scratch, shake the pen and make sure the surface of the bodywork is clean. Now apply the touch-up paint in thin, light layers over the scratch, allowing each layer to dry for 25 minutes before applying another. After the final paint layer, leave it to cure for 24 hours before adding some lacquer or polishing compound to blend it in with the rest of the paintwork. For more information, see our step-by-step guide on using our touch-up pen.
How do I touch-up a paint chip on my BMW?
To fix a paint chip on your BMW, we recommend you use the PaintNuts touch-up bottle and brush that’s colour-matched to your vehicle. To use the touch-up bottle and brush to fix a paint chip to your vehicle, follow the advice below:
1. Thoroughly shake the bottle for at least 60 seconds so the lacquer is mixed correctly.
2. Clean the working area so the surface is clean, dry, and free of wax, polish, and dust.
3. Apply thin, light coats of touch-up paint in smooth strokes. Make sure the brush sits in the chip so you only apply the paint within the damaged area.
4. Leave the touch-up paint to dry for 10-25 minutes before applying a second coat. Depending on the depth of the chip, you may need to apply more than two coats.
5. Leave the paint to cure for 24 hours.
6. Apply a polishing compound like PaintNuts Scratch & Scuff Remover to blend the new paint in with the old.
