What colour is my car?
Cars are available in thousands of colours. Everyone can tell red from white, but it’s more complicated than that.
- The colour ‘white’ alone has hundreds of different shades
- It takes around seven different paint colours to custom-mix a white car paint
- It’s a similar story for many other colours of car paint
So, if you want to get the best results for your scratch, scuff or chip repair, it’s critical to order the exact right one for your car. There are a few options for how you can do this.
1. Find your paint code by reg
This is our recommendation. Most car owners can find their paint code on our website using their vehicle registration number. Just type it into the colour matched car paint box and click search.
Your results will confirm the exact make, model, year and basic colour of your car - for example, black.
There are just as many shades of black as there are white. However, we carry your ‘paint code by reg’ information right through to checkout, so you can be sure you’re buying the right one.
2. Find your paint code by brand search
On our website, we’ve created a search by brand tool so you can search for and order your paint code quickly this way. This works if you know your paint code, or can find it on your car.
- Scroll down from the ‘paint code by reg’ box and choose your car manufacturer from the list.
- Read our quick tips/see the diagram of where your manufacturer places paint codes on the vehicle. It’s usually under the bonnet, or inside the door jamb. The codes looks like a short list of letters and numbers.
- Check your vehicle and note the code.
- You can put your key (basic) colour into the search box and choose from the different shade variants. For example:

3. Find your paint code in other ways
Finding your paint code by reg is the easiest method but it’s not always possible - but it’s not difficult to find it in other ways.
- Car manufacturers generally record the original paint code of your car in the boot, under the bonnet, or inside the door jamb. The codes looks like a short list of letters and numbers.
- Check the guides on the individual manufacturer pages to discover where your manufacturer is most likely to have put the codes though, or you might be there for a while.
- Some brands and classic cars might not be on our database. You can contact your car manufacturer for the code.
- You could also consider taking to Google or car club forums to find the original paint colour of your car. However, if you do an internet search, it’s impossible to know if the information is 100% correct.
